Summertime in the Pool
Sam Adams Summer Ale. Although it is labeled as a plain old Ale, it is actually a wheat beer. They cut down on the traditional Wheat beer tastes such as wheat, yeast and sourness and made a light ale that really hits the spot when you are in the pool on a hot day.
After a good day of skiing
If you're out in the Rockies and the bar at the bottom of the mountian has it, nothing is better than a Fat Tire from the New Belgium Brewing Co. On tap, it is fantastic (not quite as great in the bottle, but still good.) Its got enough flavor for a beer guy to enjoy, is nice and smooth and is a perfect way to prepare for the hot-tub.
Before a good meal
This is pretty wide open, but since many restaurants now offer it, Sam Adams Lager, particularly from the tap, is the perfect beer to compliment a good steak and some wine. If its not offered, Bass Ale also will fit the bill nicely.
Wheat beers
There are, in reality, three main styles of wheat beer: Belgian Wit, German Weiss, and American Wheat. For the Belgian Wit, try the brand that revived the style in the '70's, Hoegaarden Witbier. If you prefer and American version of the style, Celis White from Austin, TX is also excellent. It should be. The same person is responsible for both beers. Piere Celis left Hoegaarden after being boutgh out, and came to America with the Witbier style that he had brought to life in Belgium.
For a German Weiss style beer, I would recommend Franziskaner HefeWeiss. This beer is fantastic on a hot day.
For the American style wheat beers, try either Breckenridge Mountain Wheat from Denver, Colorado or Matilda Bay Redback from Western Australia.
Good Belgian Examples
There are many types of Belgian beer out there. For someone new to Belgian beer, you can gain a general feel for how unique they are by checking out the following (mostly readily available) beers:
DuvelThe classic Belgian strong ale, should convince anyone that the Belgians mean business.
Chimay Grande ReserveA good Belgian Brown Ale, usually liked by all
Corsendonk Agnus (aka Pale)A good, generally well liked Belgian Blonde Ale
Hoegaarden WitbierThe classic Belgian witbier
Affligem NoelA smooth, thick, strong, dark blessing
